Lithography is a process that is used to print pictures or text onto a smooth surface. This type of printing was invented in 1798 by a man named Alois Senefelder. It was the first new printing method invented since the fifteenth century. Lithography has been improved throughout the years and is the most convenient way of printing used today. 

Most every commercial printer uses lithography. The equipment may be rather expensive but the process itself is very inexpensive. The main principal behind lithography is the fact that water and oil does not mix. The process begins with plates that have the image of the text or design engraved into them. The part of the plates that does not have the image engraved absorbs water. These plates are either plastic or very supple aluminum. They are also textured and covered with a liquid.

The plates are attached to a printing press and used to transfer the image to paper through a unique process called offset lithography. During this process ink is carefully spread across the plate then transferred to what is called a “blanket”. From the blanket it is transferred onto the final product. It earned its name of offset because of the step between the images being transferred from the plates to the paper. The plates stay wet while the printing is taking place so the ink will only stick to the places where the image is engraved.

Lithography is mainly used for printing items that are massed produced such as books, catalogs, postcards and newspapers. It is great for this type of printing because the last print is as clear and vivid as the first. It provides a way to produce large quantities of printing fast, easy and accurately.
